Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
