The former Brazilian president arrested after being deemed a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
