Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior political figure said the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
