Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the official, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
